First round of JoSAA allotment 2025: IIT Bombay continues to remain most preferred choice | Education News

IIT Bombay has once again emerged as the most preferred Indian Institute of Technology among top JEE Advanced rankers, reaffirming a consistent trend seen over the years. This was reflected as the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) released the first seat allotment on Saturday, showing that 78 of the top 100 rankers have secured seats at IIT Bombay.

As per the data shared by IIT Kanpur, the organising institute for JEE Advanced and JoSAA counselling this year, among the top 10 rankers, nine registered for JoSAA and all opted for IIT Bombay, further proving the institute to be the top choice for India’s brightest engineering aspirants.

The trend continues well beyond the top 100. Out of the top 500 rankers, 185 have been allotted seats at IIT Bombay. Whereas among the top 1,000, 258 candidates have been allotted seats at IIT Bombay. Although the JoSAA office did not share specific branches allotted to these students, Computer Science and Engineering is traditionally the most sought-after programme at IIT Bombay.

Commenting on this continuous flow of high-ranking candidates to IIT Bombay, Professor Shireesh Kedare, director of the institute, said, “There are multiple factors leading to this, such as campus life combined with learning and research opportunities, and the location of the institute in Mumbai. Furthermore, the administration is constantly working toward providing a better experience for students.”

While IIT Bombay continues to attract the majority of top-ranking candidates, other established IITs—including Delhi, Madras, Kharagpur, and Kanpur—have also secured a fair share of high scorers. Among the newer IITs, IIT Hyderabad is showing signs of rising prominence, with five candidates from the top 500 opting for the institute this year.
